App Maintenance Cost After Launch: What You'll Really Pay in Year 1, 2 and 4 (2026)
Nobody warns you about this part. You pay for the app, you launch, you celebrate. A month later a developer emails to say iOS just updated and your login screen is broken.
It's not that anyone did anything wrong. Apps aren't like a printed book. They're more like a car. They need servicing whether or not you drive them.
Here's what that actually costs, with the caveat that the numbers below come from published agency estimates and vary a lot by app. Use them as ranges, not quotes.
How the bill changes over time
Figures from published agency estimates (mainly TekRevol). Treat as ranges.
One thing guides rarely say out loud: year four often costs more than year two. Technical debt and aging libraries pile up, and that's when a quiet app suddenly needs a big update.
What it looks like in dollars
And by what you originally paid to build it:
| Build cost | Year 1 | Year 2 onwards (per year) | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $12,000 – $20,000 | $6,000 – $10,000 | $500 – $835 |
| $100,000 | $30,000 – $50,000 | $15,000 – $25,000 | $1,250 – $2,085 |
| $250,000 | $75,000 – $125,000 | $37,500 – $62,500 | $3,125 – $5,210 |
If your app cost $15,000 to $30,000 to build, which is common for a startup MVP, the same percentages put you at roughly $200 to $600 a month after year one. Not nothing, but not scary either.

Where the money actually goes
The takeaway: labour is where you can actually save. Hosting and API fees cost the same wherever your developer lives. The retainer doesn't. That's one reason teams in India are popular for maintenance work, with senior rates often 60 to 70% below US or UK levels. See our senior developer rates in India for real numbers.
What happens if you skip it
It's a very quiet failure. There's no single day when the app dies. It just gets worse a bit at a time, until someone finally looks and the bill is huge.
Five ways to keep the bill sensible
- Plan for it before you build. Put 15 to 20% of the build budget aside for year one at the start, not as a surprise later.
- Choose boring tech. Popular frameworks like Flutter and React Native have large communities, regular updates and lots of developers. Obscure stacks cost more to maintain. Our Flutter vs React Native comparison goes deeper.
- Pay a small monthly retainer. It beats emergency rates, and someone already knows the code when it matters.
- Turn on monitoring on day one. Catching a problem in an hour is much cheaper than finding it in a month.
- Own your code and documentation. If your developer disappears, the next one needs to be able to take over. If you're in that spot already, read our guide to rescuing an abandoned app.
