EU AI Act in 2026: What Actually Applies to Your AI Agent (And What Got Delayed)
Every time we read about the EU AI Act, there's a new date. Deadline moved, deadline confirmed, deadline "provisional". It's exhausting, and if you're running a small team, you probably just want to know one thing: do I need to do something this quarter?
So here's the version without the legal fog. It isn't legal advice, and the details changed during 2026, so use it to get oriented and then check with a lawyer.
The dates, in order

What this means for a normal business agent
Think support bots, lead qualifiers, booking assistants, internal helpers. For most of these the practical to-do list is short:
- Disclose. A line at the start of the chat: "You're talking to an AI assistant." Plus an easy way to reach a person.
- Don't wander into the banned list. Emotion-manipulation tricks, exploiting vulnerable people, social scoring. If you're building a normal business tool, you're nowhere near it. Good.
- Keep staff informed. The AI literacy duty is now softer, but "our team understands what the tool can and can't do" is simply good practice.
- Log what the agent does. Not required for every agent, but if you ever move into hiring or credit, you'll wish you'd started.
That's it for most teams. If your agent does touch the high-risk areas, you have until December 2027, which sounds like plenty. It isn't. Documentation, oversight and testing take months.
The money part
Fines get the headlines. In practice the bigger risk for a small company is a customer or partner asking "are you compliant?" and you not having an answer. Procurement teams in the EU are already asking.
Not sure which box you're in?
We build AI agents with disclosure, logging and human hand-off included by default, so you aren't bolting compliance on later. If you want a second opinion on what your agent needs, book a free call. We'll tell you straight if it's a one-line disclosure or something bigger.
