The strangler-fig pattern is a phased migration strategy where you gradually replace parts of a legacy system with new functionality, while the old system continues to run in parallel. New functionality is built in the modern system; traffic is routed to the new system piece by piece as each part is proven; eventually the legacy system is retired. We use it because it avoids the biggest risk in modernization: a big-bang rewrite where you try to replace everything at once, fail halfway through, and end up with two half-working systems.
